The legislative attempt to initiate a "Sportsmen's" constitutional amendment by resolution did not succeed in the latest session of our Unicameral. The good news is that it moved further in the process than the resolution did in the previous legislature. Sportsmen can take heart that a clear majority voted positively when Senator Schrock mustered the needed thirty three votes to over ride the Senator Chambers filibuster and then 36 senators voted to pass the bill on first round reading. But the bad news is that the speaker Senator Brashear then failed to schedule any further debate and/or floor votes. It would seem that perhaps the Regent Hergert impeachment might have gotten in the way, when Senator Schrock was one of the leaders of the impeachment process.
The issue has not went away, but will need to be re-initiated in a future legislature or sportsmen will have to become strongly enough organized to muster an initiative petition. The latter would be a most difficult project with signatures costing 4 to7 dollars for the paid petitioners or some very dedicated sportsmen collecting 120,000 valid signatures from our 93 counties.
Rest assured the need is still prominent and pressing in all states.
We suggest that you read our original March 2005 information on LR8CA on our website.
Legislative Reality of Nebraska's "Term Limit Law"
On November 7th, we will be electing twenty two new senators which is nearly half of the body. Sportsmen would do well to work to get the best representative for the future of our outdoor sports.
The Sportsmen's Foundation has tried to shed some light on the issues by canvassing the candidates with a questionnaire asking for candidates opinions about pertinent topics. As always the major issue facing our fish and wildlife management is the issue of having a stable revenue source to conduct appropriate wildlife activities. Several of the questions in the survey spoke to this issue. Other topics dealt with availability of places to hunt or fish and protection of the basic needs for our wildlife resources like water and space. Be sure to arm yourself with knowledge of the candidates opinions and views before you go to the polls. BUT by all means DO VOTE
