NEBRASKA 2006 LEGISLATIVE CANDIDATE SURVEY
We asked the 2006 legislative candidates the following questions. Their responses are listed below by District. This information is also available to download in a printable PDF format, along with several other questions and other information HERE.

As a preface to this, we suggest that you read LR8CA Update and our original March 2005 information on LR8CA on our website.

  1. Hunting and fishing have a major impact on the State of Nebraska
  2. WIth the continuing growth of urban areas, public access to hunting, fishing, and recreational areas continues to shrink. Currently, there are laws assuring no net loss of wetlands, stating, in effect, that if wetlands are lost to development, and equal and/or greater amount of wetlands must be built in another area. A similar law assuring no net loss of public hunting, fishing, and recreational lands to development, urbanization, etc., should be in place in Nebraska.
  3. With the continuing loss of public access to hunting, fishing, and recreational areas, I support the acquisition of land suitable for recreation from willing sellers by the state for public hunting, fishing, and recreational use.
  4. With agriculture, power companies, recreational enthusiasts and federal, state and city governments vying for water and water rights, legislative safeguards for recreational use should be implemented.
  5. Currently, a number of Midwestern states finance a portion of their fish and wildlife programs with a small percentage of state sales tax revenue. Nebraska's state fish and wildlife programs should be funded in part with a percentage of state sales tax revenue.
  6. Currently, 31 states and the federal government separate fuel taxes paid by motorboat owners and dedicate that money to motorboat-related benefits. State legislation to earmark motorboat fuel taxes for motorboat benefits should be passed.
  7. With the growing threat from animal-rights and anti-hunting activists growing from an increasingly urban population, the Nebraska Legislature should take steps, through a Constitutional Amendment, to protect hunting, fishing, and trapping.
